Trade Name search is the first step for fulfilling the commercial registration of companies and establishments. This service is useful for investors and businessmen inside and outside Oman, and even for the registered companies and establishments.
Who can request this service
Investors and businessmen who are natural or juristic persons.
Steps to follow to request the service
Process Steps:
- The investor should apply, through a certified transactions clearance bureau, a law firm, or any Directorate for a trade name/ brand of the company/ establishment he intends to register. So is the case for the registered companies of their new branches.
- The concerned office searches in the Ministry’s system if there is an identical name. The new name and the applicant’s particulars are entered in the system.
- The computerized system sends an email or a text message to the applicant stating the application number and time and date of submission
- Another email/ message will be sent to the applicant informing him the status of the application (Approved, rejected, need more information, etc.)
- In case of approval, a certificate of the trade name will be given to the applicant.
- The number of the application will be submitted when registering the company/ establishment.

- No application Form is required.
- An evidence of the meaning of the name may be required, sometimes.
What documents are needed to process
Copy of the investor’s ID Card/ Passport whether he is natural or juristic person (Omani or Foreigner).

Conditions of Registering the Trade Names
- The trade name must be Arabic corresponds to the public manners and traditions.
- It should not have been registered before at the Ministry.
- The trade name could be replicated if the business is different.
- The terms (International, Global, Overseas, etc. for companies whose capital is RO 100,000 or above.
- The word (Oman or Omani) could be used by companies/ establishments whose capital is RO 500,000 or above.
- Names of rivers, cities, and famous places of Arabic countries whenever existed.
- Names of distinguished personalities could be used based on specialization (Ibn Alnafees, Ibn Al Haythem) etc.
- The trade name could bear the title (Abu {name of son or daughter}) if the investor has that son/ daughter.
Restrictions of Registration
- A single trade name is not allowed to register it again if the name is put in the plural. Example: Outlook Rose would not be Outlook Roses.
- Names of Non Arabic towns and cities are not permitted.
- Names of Arabic or Foreign countries are not permitted, such as Lebanon, Saudi, etc.
- The words Mother or Daughter are not permitted in the trade name.
- The personal name of the foreign partner investor is not permitted in the trade name unless that name is a registered company abroad. (Foreign Investment)
- The name of the tribe is not permitted to be pluralized by adding (Aal).
- Names of minor/ underage partners are not permitted except in limited liability companies.
- Proper nouns are only allowed if it refers to the name of the investor.
- All natural or juristic persons can submit an application.
- Citizens, GCC Countries’ nationals, Residents, visitors, etc. can submit the application.
How the service is processed
- The application will be received and the applicant will be notified by email or a text message.
- The applicant will be informed by an email or a text message in case the application is (approved, rejected, or need more information).
