The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology has brought together groups of local and foreign investors in the governorate of Dhofar to host and process data.
As a result of a partnership between local and international digital innovation companies, Green Data City is building a large data centre to store, process, and mine data for applications like distributed ledger technologies, blockchain, and Fintech.
The ministry’s job is to get digital investments in advanced technologies like data hosting and data processing to come to the country. The ministry wants to speed up the use of distributed ledger technologies, blockchains, and fintech through this investment opportunity.
MTCIT thinks that such advanced technologies have a bright future around the world. As a result, it is working to localise technology and find jobs for young IT specialists in Oman. When the facility is fully set up, the investment opportunity will be worth more than OMR150 million. It will also help create more than 150 jobs while the centre is being built and run.
The investment opportunity takes advantage of Oman’s digital investment incentives and, more specifically, the large number of submarine data cables that land in Oman and provide high-speed, always-on, and redundant connections to the rest of the world. Also, the governorate of Dhofar has natural competitive advantages, such as wind, solar, and deep-sea cooling, that can be used to provide alternative sources of energy to power the data centre.
Eng. Saeed Bin Hamoud Al Mawali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, said that the Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology wants to work with leading local and international private sector organisations on data-related projects and other digital innovations. He also said that Oman is a good place to test out new technologies because it has competitive advantages that make it attractive for digital investments. Green Data City is one of the few digital investments that stand out in this field.
The minister also said that getting digital investments will speed up the goals of the National Digital Economy Program and help achieve the growth that is wanted in the use of Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) technologies, as well as make Oman a hub for green and sustainable data centres in the region by making the most of submarine data cables and renewable energy opportunities.
Eng. Olivier Ohnheiser, CEO of Green Data City, said that the Governorate of Dhofar is strategically placed and has unique advantages to build sustainable hyper-scale data centers, such as a stable economy, cool weather in the Salalah area, unique access to cold deep ocean water next to the shore, and a lot of renewable energy. Green Data City will be built in two stages. The first stage will be powered by the traditional electricity grid, while the second stage will use wind, solar, and deep-sea water cooling to power the 200 MW facility.
Eng. Saeed Bin Hamood Al Mawaali, who is the Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, went to the new site while the technical team showed the immersion cooling technology, which is used to reduce the amount of electricity used.
Ohnheiser thanked the leaders of the government for making this investment possible so that they could attract more foreign direct investors in the data hosting and processing industries.
